Every year, a new generation of future Geodetic Engineers leaves the lecture halls and goes out into the field, ready to turn academic theory into spatial reality. Datum One Surveys, Ltd. Co. (DOS) was recently honored to welcome Bicol University Geodetic Interns from the College of Engineering, allowing them to experience firsthand the essence of professional land surveying, geospatial processing, and cutting-edge field technology.
These students, coming from a university renowned for its sharp engineering talent, were ready to put their foundations to the test. Over the course of their internship, they didn’t just observe the industry, they actively contributed to it.
Technical Precision: From Raw Data to Deliverables
In the classroom, bearings are just page problems; at DOS, they are real-world responsibilities. In the initial phase of their training, the BUGE interns joined us to help and support our core technical workflows throughout the office. Specifically, they supported key tasks like encoding technical descriptions, parcel plotting, georeferencing, and plan sorting. Handling actual project datasets allowed interns to experience professional surveying workflows under real deadlines.

They weren’t just doing hypothetical coursework. For instance, interns actively handled encoding technical descriptions, parcel plotting, georeferencing, and sorting project plans. A significant moment was witnessing their technical plots and georeferenced files overlaid onto spatial platforms such as Google Earth, where abstract coordinates were turned into defined physical parcels and linked to actual locations on the ground.

Into the Field: Aerial Mapping and Relocation Surveys
The field of geodetic engineering is evolving constantly, and modern practice requires skills that go beyond traditional terrestrial instruments. To showcase complete field operations, mentors brought Bicol University OJTs alongside DOS Geodetic Engineers in the field. Throughout their fieldwork, the interns actively participated in our team’s aerial drone surveys and relocation surveys.


In addition, they experienced hands-on field execution, including pre-flight UAV planning, aerial capture, and boundary relocation assessments. Our engineers introduced students to the profession’s future through faster, secure, and highly detailed spatial data collection.




Shaping the Next Generation of Geodetic Engineers
An internship is not just a way of completing required training hours, but a transition from student to professional colleague. We were impressed by the interns’ solid technical foundations, professional adaptability, and genuine enthusiasm. Moreover, they tackled hard work with determination, asked insightful questions, and energized our office and field crews. As mentors, we focused on sharing our workflows and building their confidence as incoming geodetic engineers.



Looking Ahead
These BUGE interns came to Datum One Surveys as students trying to dip their toes into their chosen profession. They leave with sharp technical skills, real world field experience and a clear vision of the impact they can make as future Geodetic Engineers.
